Ada Roe (née Giddings; 6 February 1858 – 11 January 1970)[1] was a British supercentenarian who was the oldest recognised living person from the death of Marie Bernatkova on 4 May 1969, until her own death on 11 January 1970. She is the last surviving person born in the 1850s.

Biography

Ada was born in Islington, England, and later moved to Lowestoft, where she ran a dairy shop for over 75 years, continuing to help at the age of 110.[2]

She attributed her longevity to a good childhood.[3] At the time of her death, Roe was also the oldest British person ever.

Roe passed away in Lowestoft, on 11 January 1970, at the age of 111 years, 339 days.

After her death, the title of oldest living person went to Josefa Salas Mateo of Spain, although it could have gone to Marie Laure du Serre-Telmon. Roe's successor as the oldest living British person, Alice Stevenson, would herself go on to become the oldest British person ever, reaching the age of 112 years, 39 days.
