Thorpe was born on 16 April 1908, in Danville, Virginia, to Rev. Reuben and Priscilla Hooper. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Bluefield State College in Bluefield, West Virginia, graduating as salutatorian with a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. She began teaching English at Westmoreland High School in 1933, before moving to John M. Langston High School when it opened in 1936. She taught for 33 years, retiring in 1966.
Thorpe was married to Rev. C.M. Thorpe, but never had any children. Her husband was a pastor for 29 years, and also taught at Pittsylvania County Training School. He died in 1963.
Thorpe currently lives in a nursing home in Danville, Virginia, where she became a supercentenarian in April 2018.
