Amelia C. Schmidt (née Duttman; 7 September 1875 – 17 February 1986) was a validated American supercentenarian.

Biography[]

Amelia Duttman was born in a log cabin just outside of Garnavillo, Iowa, USA as one of nine siblings. Her family was of German ancestry. When Schmidt was 17, she became a schoolteacher.

She married Charles Schmidt, a German immigrant laborer, around 1896. The couple had two children in total. She worked as a taylor, and became well known in her area for her knitting and sewing. Charles died in 1918.

Schmidt was living at home until she was 97, when she had to undergo a gallbladder operation. She then moved to Riverview Care Center in Gutenberg, Iowa. When she was 109, it was mentioned that her hearing and eyesight was bad. Her son Milton was still alive at the time. She enjoyed playing bingo, cards and visiting church. When asked what it feels like being the oldest Iowan, she said that she felt honoured.

Schmidt’s sister-in-law was validated supercentenarian Gretchen Dettman (1890-2001), who was a wife of her brother. Together, they have a combined age of over 222 years.

Schmidt died in Guttenberg, Iowa, USA on 17 February 1986 at the age of 110 years, 163 days.
