Robert "Bob" Taggart (28 June 1900 – 13 August 2009) [1] was a British centenarian who was the second-oldest man in the United Kingdom (after Stanley Lucas), and the oldest man in Scotland, at the time of his death.[2][3]

Biography[]

Taggart was born on the High Street in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire.[4]

He started working on the railways when he was 14 years old, and spent his entire career in the railway industry, working his way up to his final position as a claims inspector.[1] He had a great love for bowls, which he played up to the age of 104.[1] A former club singer, Taggart credited his longevity to singing songs by Engelbert Humperdinck.[3][5] Taggart was part of the Home Guard during World War II.[6]

Taggart was married for 65 years to Dorcas Taggart, who died in 1998 at age 90.[1] He had five daughters—Mabel, Nan, Betty, June, and Margaret[7] —15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.[1] He lived in his native Rutherglen for his entire life.[6]

Taggart died in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK on 13 August 2009 at the age of 109 years, 46 days.
