Leolyn Semeyn (11 September 1895 – 7 January 2006) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). [1]

Biography[]

Leolyn Semeyn was born in Kent County, Michigan, USA, on 11 September 1895. Her grandfather fought in the Civil War and her family were fruit farmers in Michigan. Leolyn graduated in 1915 from Western Michigan University, and married Walter H. Semeyn soon after.

They moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and had 2 sons: Don B. Semeyn and Walter Semeyn Jr. Walter Jr. died in 1981 at the age of 60; Don was still alive at the time of his mother's death (he was 81). Leolyn and her husband built the Rio Grande Apartments in 1949. The building was one of Florida's first cooperative apartment complexes.

Leolyn Semeyn came to Sarasota from Fort Lauderdale in 1971. She lived there for the rest of her life, eventually moving into the Bay Village Retirement Center. For her 110th birthday in 2005, she was sent letters from the president and from former NBC weatherman Willard Scott. She was officially pronounced her county's oldest resident by County Commissioner David Mills. [2]

Leolyn Semeyn died in Bay Village Retirement Center, Florida, USA, on 7 January 2006, at the age of 110 years, 118 days.
