Biography

Wilhelmina Cammel was born in Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands on 8 January 1871. She lost both parents when she was 12 and lived in an orphan house until she was 18. After that, she lived with the Delprat-Benthem van den Bergh family and worked there as governess and companion. She travelled all over the world since the father of the family was a consul. During this time, Wilhelmina lived in many places such as the Unites States, Japan, Dutch East Indies and Africa. She never married because she said it brought misery. Back in the Netherlands, she moved into a nursing home after the mother of the family died.

She lived in a nursing home in Bussum until the age of 109, when she moved to another nursing home in the nearby city of Naarden. At 109, she expressed her wish to become the oldest living person in the Netherlands, which she became a couple of months later after the death of Gerarda Hurenkamp-Bosgoed.

Cammel died in Naarden, North Holland, Netherlands on 24 January 1981 at the age of 110 years, 16 days.
