Yoshino Tanaka [Japanese: 田中ヨシノ] (3 March 1900 – 30 July 2013) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest living person in Japan, after Misao Okawa.

At the time of her death, she was also the joint ninth-oldest in the world, along with Maria Gravigi (3 March 1900 – 15 August 2013). She and Gravigi were the longest lived people ever who were born on the same day until 13 December 2019 when Anne Brasz-Later and Irene Dutton (born 16 July 1906) both surpassed Tanaka’s age.

Biography[]

Yoshino Tanaka was born in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan on 3 March 1900. Until the age of 103, she knitted sweaters for her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.

At the age of 105, Tanaka was reported to be the oldest living person in Shimabara. At the time, she lived with her second son, her daughter-in-law, her grandchildren, and her two great-grandchildren in Edocho, Shimabara. She rarely got ill, and wasn't taking any medication. She was eating correctly three times a day, and was still watching her favourite drama.

Tanaka's age was verified by Japan's MHLW and Stefan Gelow, and validated by the GRG on 5 May 2010. Following the death of 112-year-old Shika Shimada on 20 July 2010, she became the oldest living person in Nagasaki Prefecture.

Yoshino Tanaka died in Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan on 30 July 2013, at the age of 113 years, 149 days. She is currently the oldest validated person ever from Nagasaki Prefecture.
