Gladys Ivy Hawley (née Staten;18 December 1891 – 28 April 2004) was a British supercentenarian, who was the oldest living person in the United Kingdom from the death of Nellie Bradley on 11 March 2002, until her own death on 28 April 2004.[1]
Biography
Hawley was born in Walsingham, Norfolk. She married Alfred Hawley in 1927, and had no children. She was trained as a nurse, and lived in Ashgate, Derbyshire.[2]
Hawley lived at the Brookholme Residential Home at the time of her death. When asked for the secret of her longevity, she replied "good, clean living". She was able to walk around with a frame until a few years before her death.[3]
Following Hawley's death on 28 April 2004, Lucy d'Abreu of Scotland, became the oldest person in the UK, at the age of 111.
