Centenarian

Howard Rayner Buss (25 June 1911 – 25 January 2019) was a centenarian from New Zealand who was the country’s oldest known living man for nearly two-and-a-half years until his death.

Biography[]

Howard Rayner Buss was born in New Zealand on 25 June 1911 to parents George Howard Buss and Frances Ethel Buss. He had three siblings: Fanny (married Cresswell), Fred, and Patricia (married McLean), all of whom predeceased him. He survived multiple earthquakes during his lifetime, which he was much admired for in his later life.

On 7 August 2016, at the age of 105, Buss became the oldest known man in New Zealand following the death of 108-year-old Bob Edwards. However, he wasn’t known to researchers until his 107th birthday in 2018, when the NZ Parliament Order Paper congratulated him on reaching the milestone. Trevor Tuckey (1912–2017) and Ronald Hermanns (1911–2021) were previously thought to have been the oldest.

Buss died in a care home in Harewood, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand on 25 January 2019 at the age of 107 years, 214 days. His successor as New Zealand’s oldest man was the aforementioned Ronald Hermanns.
