Matilda Serec (neé Gider; 22 October 1909 – 7 March 2019) was a Slovenian centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Slovenia at the time of her death.

Biography

Matilda Gider was born in the village of Krasci, municipality of Cankova, Prekmurje, Austria-Hungary (Hungarian part of the Empire; now Slovenia) on 22 October 1909. She was the oldest of 11 children. Her mother lived to be 93 years. As a young woman from a poor peasant family, she often went on a seasonal farm work in Austria and Germany.

In 1932, she married Jozef Serec, a farmer and shipper on Mur river from Satahovci near Murska Sobota. The couple had six children in total, of which one died as an infant. She worked her entire life on a family farm. Her long-time hobby was making crepe-paper flowers.

She became the oldest known living person in Slovenia following the death of 110-year-old Niko Dragos on 31 March 2018.

Matilda Serec died in the village of Satahovci, municipality of Murska Sobota, Prekmurje, Slovenia on 7 March 2019 at the age of 109 years, 136 days. Following her death, then 106-year-old Julijana Zakrajsek became the oldest known living person in Slovenia.
