Mito Umeta (Japanese: 梅田ミト; 27 March 1863 – 31 May 1975) was a Japanese supercentenarian who held the Guinness title for the world's oldest living person from 1973 to 1975. At the time of her death, she was the oldest Japanese person ever. She was also the second to last person born in 1863, with Niwa Kawamoto being the last and oldest.
Biography[]
Umeta was born in Kumamoto Domain, Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture), Japan, on 27 March 1863. Converted from the old Japanese calendar to the Gregorian calendar, her date of birth is 14 May 1863. She married Rinjiro Umeda in 1900, but her husband died in 1907. They had 4 children (all deceased as of 1975). She had 2 grandchildren. In July 1972, she had been admitted to a nursing home. Her favorite food was rice balls and kinako.
Following the death of Haruno Shimada on 31 December 1969, she became the oldest living person in Japan. Following the death of Elizabeth Watkins on 31 October 1973, she became the world's oldest living person. Umeta was the first validated Japanese supercentenarian to celebrate 111th and 112th birthdays.
Umeta died of heart failure at the Institute for Endogenous Medicine (Japanese: 熊本大学体質医学研究所) of Kumamoto University, Akita, Kumamoto (present-day Minami-ku ward of Kumamoto City), at 1 AM of 31 May 1975, at the age of 112 years, 65 / 17 days.
