Nabi Tajima [Japanese: 田島ナビ] (4 August 1900 – 21 April 2018) was a Japanese supercentenarian who was the oldest validated person in the world at the time of her death, also the fifth-oldest validated person ever whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She became the oldest person in Japan following the death of an anonymous woman of Tokyo on 27 September 2015, and the oldest person in the world following the death of Violet Brown on 15 September 2017. Tajima was the last known surviving validated person born in the year 1900, as well as the last known surviving validated person born in the 19th century.

Biography

Tajima was born on 4 August 1900, in Araki, an area of what was then Wan Village, in the westernmost part of Kikaijima Island, Kagoshima prefecture. In her later life, she lived in Kikai, located on the same island in the prefecture of Kagoshima. On her 117th birthday in 2017, she had nine children (seven sons and two daughters), 28 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, 64 great-great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-great-grandchildren.

Tajima died from natural causes at a hospital in Kikaijima, Kagoshima, Japan on 21 April 2018, at the age of 117 years, 260 days. She had reportedly been hospitalized since January of the same year.

Tajima is currently the second-oldest validated Japanese person ever (after Kane Tanaka), and is also currently the fifth-oldest validated person ever recorded (after Jeanne Calment, Tanaka, Sarah Knauss, and Lucile Randon).
