Biography

Rosena Hankerson was born as Rosena Price in Red Oak, Barnwell, South Carolina, USA, on 16 March 1907. Her parents were Angus and Rivannah (née Owens) Price. She was the fifth of 11 children born to the couple. In her 20s, Rosena became a teacher, and taught for over 40 years. Several of her siblings also became teachers.

Rosena married Lucius Hankerson in the early-mid 1940s, but the couple never had any children together. They were married for around 50 years, until Lucius passed away on 7 February 1997 aged 92/93. During this time, she was the secretary at the Ned Branch Baptist Church for nearly 40 years.

Rosena moved into a nursing home (which was only 20 miles from where she grew up) some time after she was widowed, and is still there as of her 110th birthday. On her 107th birthday, she stated that one of her fond memories of her past life was cooking. One of Rosena’s sisters, Jessie Lee (née Price) Dicks, lived to be 101, dying in 2004. Jessie was also Rosena's last surviving sibling.

Rosena Hankerson died in Bamberg, South Carolina on 15 April 2018 at the age of 111 years, 30 days.
