Russell A. Buchanan (24 January 1900 – 6 December 2006) was an American centenarian who was, at the age of 106 years, 316 days, one of the last surviving American veterans of the First World War. He served in the Navy during the final months of World War I and later on enlisted in the Army to serve in World War II when he was in his 40s.
Biography[]
Buchanan was born on 24 January 1900 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. In 1918, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He stayed in the military long enough to have served in the Second World War, however, he retired from service in 1943 (i.e. after 25 years of service).
Buchanan died from a stroke in Watertown, Massachusetts, USA on 6 December 2006 at the age of 106 years, 316 days.
