His parents were William J. and Catharine Eliza Fullingim. At the age of 18, he started working on a ranch. He later worked in the cattle business and as a butcher. On August 11, 1879, he married Nancy Watson. The couple had three children in total. One of them, Madge (1891 - 1989), lived to be 97 years old. The family later moved to Oklahoma.
When asked if he had any advice for living a long life, he said "No, because no one would take it if I gave it".
She was married to her wife from 11 August 1879 until 25 April 1964, which would mean a marriage that lasted 84 years, 258 days. They were the world's longest known married couple.
